Site was working fine until I tried to change the domain name (staying on the same server and keeping the same database).

I had a domain setup and working site on current.com. I had an alias setup of new.co.uk but when it redirected the links showed as current.com again. To get rid of this I removed the alias, created a domain new.co.uk and thought I’d transfer the site over to it. (The current.com was only to get the site working)

I didn’t get too far (simply created the domain and then copied the files from current domain directory to the new one). Then I started to read what to do next but I couldn’t resist and browsed to the new domain name to see what was there. I saw the site and wasn’t suprised that clicking on a link took me to the current domain.

I was then about to carry on following the “moving wordpress” instructions and returned to my current domain, but now when trying to get to the admin page it said it couldn’t be found (The page isn’t redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.)

If I browse to the website at current.com now I see the correct pages but it shows as if I’m logged in at the top of the screen (I’m not I logged out and I have cleared cache).

I haven’t changed any web addresses in the database yet. I have db and ftp access. I’ve checked home and siteurl and they are correct (ie current.com).

Its a voluntary website for a local school and supposed to be going live next week for their open day! If anyone can help that’d be great.

Don’t want to change too much yet as I feel this should still be working – any ideas?

  • – Skim wp_options for everything that still has an old URL in it
    – Look at your wp_post table. All the links there will be stored as well with a reference to the old URL. You should update these as well.

You probably have login ‘problems’ because your wordpress installation will point to your first domain.

Clear your browser cache fully if used to host this site locally and also flush dns if so…

    Thanks for the replies.

I’ve cleared the cache and the site has never been local. Also tried on different PCs that haven’t seen the old domain for a while.

wp_options only show the current.com address. I’ll check wp_posts but think this must be the same?

I’m unwilling to continue tryong to move the site across as I don’t think the old one should be broken. I’d be happier getting the current one running again and then attempting the move.

Right now i want to forget the new domain and get the old one working.

Forgetting the fact that I want to move to a new domain name, What i don’t understand is just because I looked at the site pages from a new URL how can that stop the original site working?

Thanks to anyone who has more ideas than me!

Ok checked the whole backup of my database SQL for web addresses – they only include references to current.com not new.co.uk.

So what can be stopping me from logging in to the current site, from the current site address? And why does the site show with the logged in toolbar across the top (but then only show the oops this is embarrasing page when you select anything from it?)

    Confused!

Maybe check whether the cookies in your browser got mixed, did you clear them already?

Ok thanks for that Bas, cleared cookies and everytthing I could in Firefox and now visiting the site doesn’t show as logged in any more.

Still get the redirect errors (ie still can’t login to do anything useful).

I’m about to delete the new.co.uk domain and see if I get back to normal.
Need to think why I’m getting the redirect errors now.

I took the plunge and renamed everything that was current.com to new.co.uk added new tables to the db so I could keep both sites live.

Both sites work if you’re browsing until you try to log in. Then you get the login page with no css applied, and the fail to load as too many redirects.

Once it’s failed the problem of showing as if user is logged in comes back.

Still lost, still running out of time!

The same situation had happened to my site.

Well glad to say all seems to be ok now.

I noticed that the wp-admin directory was no longer there.
Don’t know if I had finger trouble and accidentally deleted it via ftp or had read somewhere that it should be removed. Or maybe “better wordpress security” plugin hid it?

Anyway restoring it from an earlier backup of the files fixed the problem – the wordpress login page has its format (css) back to normal and the login now works fine. Both sites fully operational.

Thanks to Bas Schuiling and Seacoast Web Design who responded and good luck to anyone else in the same boat – hope it helps.

    Phew!
