would it help to remove the video from the page? I was pretty sure the two photos were under 500kb each but the pingdom stats show the home page is 2.3mb.

no – I havent done that. How do I go about compressing all images? Is clearing cache a separate activity or is that how I compress images?

You can either compress all the images with a plugin or on your computer and then re upload them. I said clear cache because it is a good way to flush your system. Also if you have any sort of cloudflare are related stuff running I would deactivate them to see if it helps.

after downloading the plugin, can I use it to compress the pics already loaded in my media folder? And will that then compress the pics on the website?

yes and yes

Ruth you should try the following plugins to help work out what’s going on and fix the problem:

– EWWW Image Optimizer, this automatically compresses images for you, plus a few other handy things
– P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler), this will tell you what’s eating up your site’s memory etc and causing it to load really slowly
– W3 Total Cache, you can clear the website’s cache really easily with this

is there anything that could backfire if I run the compress images? I am set to do it but wanted to be sure I wasnt going to break something, or make an image so small that it doesnt look good.
