I need to change the site & wordpress urls accessible on my wordpress dashboard under settings > general. Unfortunately, these two areas are grayed out/locked and will not let me edit them! I desperately need these two areas to not be locked.

I’ve googled around for answers, I’ve looked at articles here on wordpress, I’ve searched for help and I’ve already read this article.

(Please understand that I am NOT computer tech savvy at all so I found it quite confusing.)

However. I did log into FTP via Cyberduck, I did find the wp-config.php file, and I deleted the two lines that contained define(‘WP_SITEURL’, and also define(‘WP_HOME’, and it worked!!! The wordpress and site url areas within my wordpress dashboard were no longer gray and I could edit them!

However. While the face of my blog worked, when I clicked on any of the menu items they took me to weird spam looking pages.

Please help! How do I fix these broken page/menu links??? I’m at a loss.

I should note, that the reason I need to change the site & wordpress urls is because I need to move my wordpress blog to another domain (out of the subdirectory.) I have directions on how to do this- but the first step is changing the site & wordpress urls on my wordpress dashboard! And I can’t. Because they’re grey. And when I make them ungrey, none of the menulinks/page links in my blog work.

Remove those lines from your wp-config.php file and change the urls permanently using the functions.php method outlined in Changing_The_Site_URL

So if I do what I did before and then immediately do the editing to the functions.php file that will fix the broken links/pages on my blog?

Sorry to ask so many questions but I am not computer tech savvy at all and doing this type of thing to my blog scares the crap out of me because I’m deathly scared I’ll break it and not be able to fix it!

It may do, yes. Let’s just take it one step at a time.

Well, after either editing the wrong functions.php file or adding one in the wrong spot five different times in a row I seem to have finally done it correctly! My blog appears to be working fine now, and the blog & site urls in my admin dashboard are now unlocked. Thank you!
