• All gone. My login page is blank, homepage is blank, everything else “Requested Page not known on this server”.

Yesterday it was fine. I haven’t updated or performed any admin tasks, indeed haven’t looked at the back end of the site for at least a week.

I use Filezilla to access the server, and it all seems to be there. I have backups e-mailed to me, but don’t know the procedure.

Would be grateful for any help.

The database is amongst the files I restored.

I have since reattempted to load my most recent automatic backup back to the server via php, but it makes no difference. I am following the instructions here

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Restoring_Your_Database_From_Backup

Surely that should straighten things out. Although the sytstem tells me that the action has been successful, nothing changes. Previously I was getting the same nothing at all, now I am getting the same corrupted website.

Can you give us some specific examples of what is still missing on the site?

“Your site workes at my computer!”

The site works, but not properly. The homepage is missing all its text, sidebars are missing at random, and something has corrupted the text, as here..

    https://blackdogwines.co.uk/france/

The text issue definitely looks like a database problem. Can you check your wp-config.php file and see if contains the following lines:

/** Database Charset to use in creating database tables. */
    define('DB_CHARSET', 'utf8');

esmi, can you tell me where to finf wp-config please..

    Thread Starter eternumviti

    (@eternumviti)

OK, got. Yes, it contains those lines.

OK . This suggests that the database has been damaged & that the collation on each table needs to be reset to UTF8. Just pass this onto BT.

Ha! BT. They want to charge me (more!!) for doing any work on this as wordpress is 3rd party!

Tell me though, why can’t I simply upload my backup database, which is presumably fine, as it predates this crash?

Esmi, I am very grateful for your help on this. I have to go now, and will work on it tomorrow. Let me know your thoughts on the backup.

The problem is (as I understand it) that you don’t know exactly when this problem began. all you do know is that about a week ago, the site was fine., If the database damage began just before BT made the db backup, that could mean that it is just as damaged as the original database. ??

    Morning!

I know when the problem started – overnight 19th/20th December. BT provide a choice of file backup dates which go from 5 to 611 hours ago, so no problem there.

Additionally I have a weekly wordpress database backup sent to me automatically as an e-mail packaged up in WinRAR. Following the instructions as on the link that I showed in one of my posts above to restore the wordpress backup from a fortnight ago seems to have no effect whatsoever. The site remains in its corrupted form. I suspect therefore that my wordpress database restore routine isn’t working, that I am doing something wrong.

I guess you could ask BT to restore the whole WP installation. Before you do that, you could find your post it the DB and see if the message is screwed up there too. If the message isn’t messed up restoring the WP-install might be best. And try to disable all plugins and see what it does(I suspect nothing, but just a standard check I do when something goes wrong).

Try restoring the oldest backup along with a full copy of WordPress 3.4.2

BT have refused point-blank to have anything to do with wordpress and this matter, disclaiming any responsibility whatsoever. I had awful problems when I first uploaded the site, and in the end a ‘rogue’ operator at BT’s support centre did it for me – he knew WP and knew exactly what the problem was. The BT manager I just spoke to said that the adviser would have been reprimanded had he known about it at the time! So I am now stuck. I have no idea how to upload a fresh copy of WP.

If anybody can take me through it I would be hugely grateful!

If you cannot manage this yourself, perhaps you need to consider hiring someone to carry out the work for you.

Not this side of the Christmas holiday!
