When a new version of WordPress is released, Siteground Autoupdates only the Multisite Core and not the network.*

Does anyone see a problem with this?

Ok, I admit, I am a control freak. My preference is to update the core and the entire network at once, nice and clean and neat.

Is it still the case that the network sites will update as they are visited? That sounds so loosey-goosey to me. And, so, after I’ve called it loosey goosey, is anyone willing to admit that that is they way the do it? And it goes OK? really?

Yes, I know I can ask how high when Siteground says “jump” and go upgrade the network when they said they’ve done me the huge favor of automatically updating only the core, but the autoupdated usually runs: on the weekend, when I’m on vacation, when my kid is having a meltdown at school, etc, etc. There has not been a single, solitary time they’ve done this to me where I thought “excellent timing, I can go upgrade the network right now”.

*Bitching about Siteground: In case you are wondering, Siteground will not allow anyone or trust anyone to update their own sites, which I think is really inconvenient to the people who are WordPress professionals. I realize for the majority of wordpress users, this is wise, but it also seems to me that if you are competent and knowledgeable enough to install Multisite (which is not for the faint of heart), then you’re probably in the know and have good updating habits, including upgrading the whole network and not just the core.

So, I guess another question is: Where do you host your WordPress Multisite? Do you use domain mapping? With SSL? How many sites?

    Thanks!!!

  • What is it exactly that you are referring to as “the network”?
Isn’t multisite one single instance of WordPress, and that one instance runs all the network?

    Hi Joy,

The network is the sites on the multisite network. If you’ve ever upgraded to a new version of WordPress, you upgrade the core and then it instructs you to also update the network. This has been standard procedure for Multisite for a long time.

When Siteground autoupdates the core, when I log in, WordPress asks me to upgrade the network, which i think is sloppy and inefficient of their so-called autoupdater to do.

I think that is the database updates, since each site has its own database.
This message is also experienced on a single WP installation. It’s not Siteground’s fault.

Thank you for backing up Siteground … that wasn’t really my question though. i apologize for including the “bitching about siteground” part. I should have known everyone would focus on that and avoid answering my question.

I have never seen that message in a single WP Installation and I’ve been using both multisite and single installations since 2010.

How about I re-ask and we can focus on that:

My preference is to update the core and the entire network at once, nice and clean and neat.

It just sounds sloppy to me to update only the core and not the rest of the network.

I just did a search here on the forums for “update database” and found several topics (some recent which I remembered seeing), so you can’t just go on your experience of never having seen that message. I’ve seen it and so have others.

I haven’t read the update code in WP, but it is a separate action to deal with the files than it is to deal with the database. Particularly in a multisite, there is one set of files, but many databases. I don’t know if the same capability check is done, or whether there are timing concerns (for a large network).
