    Sorry, another question…

    It looks like it that the sitemap is not a regular file but is generated when you ask for it. Is this generation of the sitemap done everytime? Or is it copied from some other place and only regenerated when needed?

    And it looks like the file is a regular text file in stead of an xml file. is that OK? Or do I see it wrong?

    Yes and no. The sitemap’s output is stored in the database as a transient after generation for 7 days or until it’s invalidated. At the bottom of the sitemap you’ll see a comment on the sitemap’s current state (from cache or for the view).
    This ensures plugin compatibility, and more importantly, allows for a WordPress MultiSite compatible output.

    The sitemap is flushed on many occasions, to name a few:
    1. SEO settings updated.
    2. Permalinks updated.
    3. Post/Page updated/published/deleted (I think I still need to do CPT on this one).
    4. 604800 seconds (7 days) have passed.

    If it’s not outputted as an XML file, I believe there might be a theme or plugin conflict. This shouldn’t happen. Could you validate/test the sitemap through Google Webmasters and see if this causes an issue at their side?

    I looked at the sitemap using firefox, and then it looks like a regular text file. There is also no comment on the bottom.

    But…. looking at the source of the page reveals the xml file, with a comment on the bottom.

    My mistake. Should have looked a little deeper…
