Sitemap Plugin, in-line with Google’s Quality guidelines?

    I have been using the Sitemap plugin from
    https://www.arnebrachhold.de/2005/06/05/google-sitemaps-generator-v2-final
    on my blog for about a week now. The plugin not only generates a sitemap of your site but it also auto-pings google sitemaps every time you make a new post or change a post.

    However, I’ve just come across this document (Google’s Quality Guidelines):

    The page says:

    Don’t use unauthorized computer programs to submit pages, check rankings, etc. Such programs consume computing resources and violate our Terms of Service. Google does not recommend the use of products such as WebPosition Gold? that send automatic or programmatic queries to Google.

    Does the Sitemap Generator plugin in that case violate Google’s quality guidelines?

    From the same google page:

    If a site doesn’t meet our quality guidelines, it may be blocked from the index. If you determine that your site doesn’t meet these guidelines, you can modify your site so that it does and request reinclusion.
    UNQUOTE

  • Hi,

    When you sign in for google sitemaps, you stil need to make a sitemap. You can do this by using there generator, or you can do it yourself. You can in your case check on your Google account what the status of your site is.

    red-star, I’ve successfully submitted my sitemap through Google. I am actually using the plugin with the auto-ping option deactivated. What I was asking though is whether auto-pinging google using the sitemap generator plugin classes as an unauthorized computer program to submit pages for google?

    I know what you where asking.
    I’m using GSM and made a sitemap using the plugin generator.

    I also have pings and dont have any problem.

    TAB – I think what G mean is ‘Don’t submit again and again and again’. The sitemap sits on your website and elps G-bot when it happens long, so you should be safe.

    That sort of plugin has also been widely used and no-one has had problems reported here.

    Google explicitly allows this sort of thing in the case of the sitemaps.

    The gist of it is that Google provides a way for programs to “ping” Google, to tell them that the sitemap has been updated. The generator does just that. They even suggest setting it up as a cron job, with the note that you shouldn’t submit more than once per hour.

    For me, just getting WordPress increased my Google hits, and when I got the GSM plugin – even better results. From my experience using the plugin for 6 months, Google seems to like it.

    You can issue the HTTP request using wget, curl, or another mechanism of your choosing. […] An easy way to do this is to set up an automated job to generate and submit Sitemaps on a regular basis.

    You see, using an automated service is explicit wanted and allowed.

    Thanks for the reassurance everyone. I’ve got the auto-ping function reactivated now.
