I noticed that google is complaining that I don’t have sitemap.xml, I checked and indeed I have no sitemap.xml file because wordpress lately generates that “on the fly” instead of saving it as a file to the storage.

However, that causes a problem. Since there is no physical sitemap.xml file, when the 404 redirect plugin is enabled, it generates a 404 error and redirects to my homepage, resultsing = google does not finx my sitemap.xml

How can I make an exception to not redirect the missing sitemap.xml?

  • Hi thank you for contributing this scenario.

I was not aware of such an issue but will investigate.

I am not experiencing this with default WP 5.9.2

Is your sitemap generated by WP of by another SEO plugin?

    Can you investigate further please?

Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.

Once identified I can try and see a work around.

If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/health-check/
It will add some additional features under the menu item under Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, without affecting normal visitors to your site. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.
There’s a more detailed description about how to use the Health Check plugin and its Troubleshooting Mode at https://make.www.ads-software.com/support/handbook/appendix/troubleshooting-using-the-health-check/

    While troubleshooting:
    – Apparently my wordpress with the default theme, with all plugins off, does not make sitemap.xml by itself.
    – My sitemap.xml is create by a SEO plugin: “The SEO Framework”
    – This plugin does not create a physical sitemap.xml file in the wp install root folder, it creates the sitemap on the fly (somehow, injecting it, I don’t know how does this work)
    – If the 404 redirect plugin is off, the sitemap.xml can be accessed, as the plugin creates its content.
    – If the 404 plugin is on, it redirects to my homepage.

WP does generate a default sitemap but you are probably looking at the wrong place as it is prefixed by wp-

    mydomain dot com//wp-sitemap.xml

I’ll investigate the SEO framework, itis actually my preferred SEO plugin

I have tried but still can’t replicate, i.e. in a vanilla 5.9.2 plugin with the SEO framework active and my plugin I still can see the SEO frameworks’ sitemap.xml

Can you screen shot the plugin settings, so i can be sure I’m replicating, you can use any image share link here.
