• How does JETPACK create SITEMAP.XML that is not in the root and why does Google not like it?

Google Search Console (aka webmaster tools) tells me it cannot find my sitemap. If I look at my files using FileZilla, there is no sitemap.xml in the root, but if I surf to [ redundant link removed ] a page appears with links to other sitemap .XML files that are also not in the root of the site but do exist when I click on the links.

I have toggled CREATE SITEMAPS off and on in JETPACK, but SITEMAP.XML (and friends) do not appear in my root file structure. Again, when I surf to[ redundant link removed ] it comes up.

I assume there must be some sort of redirect in WP-CONFIG or elsewhere for SITEMAP.XML but I don’t know where that as and MUCH more imporantly, Google still doesn’t like it.

Where are the SITEMAPS and how can I make Google happy?

    Thanks.

According to the JetPack documentation, the sitemap is on the root, and you just need to enable the feature:

    https://jetpack.com/support/sitemaps

The URL of your site’s sitemap is working as expected. Make sure that you provide only that URL to Google, it’s the index and Google will do the rest of the work from there.

Thanks but as I said that file is not in the root even though the feature is enabled. That is the point of my question.

    To be clear.

Look a my directory https://www.commodore.ca/no-SITEMAP.jpg and note that SITEMAP.XML is not there BUT if you surf to https://www.commodore.ca/sitemap.xml, one will appear.

I see that JETPACK has a wp-content\plugins\jetpack\modules\sitemaps folder but all that is in there are .PHP’s.

    I am confused.

There is no sitemap file. It’s like your sites pages. They aren’t actual files that sit on the server, they are generated on-the-fly by WordPress to output the content. That’s exactly the same thing as the sitemap function is doing.

As for why Google doesn’t like it, I couldn’t say (I don’t use Jetpack). so you’d be bst off asking in the Jetpack support forum on here, or check their support on the Jetpack site.

Thanks. Google did not have problems seeing them in the past and JETPACK definately used to create real .XML files and update them regularly. I have no idea how they are doing it now, but I will hit the JetPack forum and ask.

    Your time is appreciated.
