sitemap.xml Question

    Hi,

    I am having issues with getting plugins to work and do the sitemap.xml file for webmaster tools. I was using the Google XML plugin but it didn’t seem to work either. I also use All in One SEO and it also has a sitemap.xml generator that doesn’t seem to work either.

    Now I might not be understanding how these things work. But the Webmaster tools (Google, Bing) always want to look in the root of the site. In my case https://pureheavencotons.com/sitemap.xml.

    So i used a website to generate a sitemap.xml and uploaded it to my site and the webmaster tools detected it and did their job.

    Now, I decided to use your plugin and installed it, but I have some questions.

    1. Do I delete the existing sitemap.xml from the root that I uploaded there?
    2. Do I not use the sitemap.xml feature built into the ‘All in One SEO’ Sitemap options?
    3. How do I resolve this sitemap.xml issue to find a plugin that actually works?

    I installed your plugin, it didn’t prompt me for anything, so I assume it is working. I tried to run the one from the All in One SEO and it tell me:

    Potential conflict with unknown file /home/content/60/11559760/html/sitemap.xml.

    Then it asks me to rename or delete the potential conflict.

    So if you could straighten me out I would really appreciate it and continue to use your plugin!

    I don’t even have folders called /home/content/60 et cetera.

    When you submit your sitemap to Google and Bing in their WMT they give you an option where the file is located at. Is it possible you have a sitemap entry that points to your site’s root? If so, you can remove the sitemap and resubmit to where you have uploaded yours to.

    To answer you questions…..

    The plugin is basically an activate and go as opposed to other plugins that have lots of options you (and most other people) don’t necessarily understand. There is a settings page for XML Sitemaps but the attempt is to keep it as limited as possible.

    When you activate the plugin is creates a file under /wp-content/sitemaps but it also adds a virtual link from /sitemap.xml to the file in the wp-content/sitemaps folder. Any time you add/remove a post/page that file is regenerated.

    1. Yes you want to remove your actual physical sitemap.xml file from the site’s root folder.

    2. Correct you would not want to use 2 different programs generating the sitemap. turn off AIO’s generation

    /home/content/60/11559760/html/ is actually the physical path on your server where your website runs from. So /home/content/60/11559760/html/sitemap.xml i the file referenced at https://pureheavencotons.com/sitemap.xml.

    OK. I deleted the sitemap file.

    I looked into my sitemaps folder and it is empty.

    0:/wp-content/sitemaps/

    (0: is the drive assigned with my FTP program) and there is no pointer file in there to point back to the root so Google can find the sitemap files.

    Is this how it is supposed to be?

    I am truly sorry for all the questions, I just want to make sure it’s working and when you say “When you activate the plugin is creates a file under /wp-content/sitemaps but it also adds a virtual link from /sitemap.xml to the file in the wp-content/sitemaps folder”, I assume that means that will be created when I make a new Blog post or a new Website Page or either?
