• I am running a website version 6.1.1, but not using Gutenberg, am using SiteOrigin Page Builder and not ready to switch yet.

When you add abpage, there’s an Add Widget button (standard with SiteOrigin) and you can select the Photonic Gallery widget, but it doesn’t work. It asks you to add a title in order to start the gallery, but then stops there. I have changed the shortcode name from Gallery to Photonic btw.

You can add a SiteOrigin editor widget (provides classic editing) and then the Add/Edit Photonic Gallery buttons appears under the title and you can add an album or photos. Doesn’t matter whether you’re in the Visual or Text mode, once you create your shortcode, it always shows up as code. If you switch to Gutenberg, and then switch back, you can then see the widget in the Visual mode, but you can’t edit it. If you save the page in Gutenberg, you can never go back to SiteOrigin, which creates as all kinds of problems with the original page setup.

Once you save the page in SiteOrigin mode, when you open it again, you can see the widget view in Visual mode, but you when you click on it, you can’t edit it. You get the hint: To edit an existing shortcode select the shortcode before clicking on the “Add / Edit Photonic Gallery” button.

There’s nothing on the SiteOrigin support site that addresses this problem with the plugin. Is there a compatibility issue with SiteOrigin that is known? I can ask there as well, but thought I’d start here first.

The only way I’ve managed to integrate the plugin into my site is to create a Gutenberg test page for creating/editing the shortcodes and then copying the finished product to the page I want to add the photos/albums to. Not the optimum way of doing things lol.

Update: you can temporarily switch from SiteOrigin to Gutenberg, edit the shortcode, then switch back to SiteOrigin. As long as you don’t forget to do this before you hit save. Otherwise, you end up with a Gutenberg page, you can’t revert back, and that may cause all kinds of formatting issues with the page you had previously constructed with rows and widgets.

I have not written/tested this for SiteOrigin – it isn’t practically possible for me to develop for every third-party builder. The only ones I have built for are Elementor and Beaver Builder. Gutenberg is not “third-party”, so that works.

My guess is that this will require special coding from my side because it is likely that some scripts etc. are not bundled by SiteOrigin (just like it is not possible for me to develop for every third-party builder, it is not possible for them to build for every plugin, I believe).

From my side I don’t have plans to add support for SiteOrigin in the near future – probably not the answer you were hoping to hear, but between plugin support and my day job, I don’t have much bandwidth to develop compatibility features for other plugins.

Understood. SiteOrigin was one of the preferred free page builders out there before Elementor became more popular. There is a (clunky) workaround. Thanks for the quick feedback. Your plugin is awesome so we’ll still be using it lol.
