Several WordPress sites we manage for clients have suddenly started being blocked by Wordfence. We have not changed any <Wordfence settings on these sites:

Your access to this site has been limited by the site owner
Your access to this service has been limited. (HTTP response code 503)
    Blocked by login security setting

We do not know if this has been caused by the recent WP core update or if it’s primarily a Wordfence issue.

Anyone else experiencing this? Any solution other than using an alternative security plugin?

  • Hey @cranleydavid,

I’m sorry to hear about your trouble.

We’re currently tracking the issue. Can you please share your server/system information? In previous cases completely resetting Wordfence has resolved the issue. But before you try this can you please run a Diagnostics report, both before and after the reset?

Please let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

Thanks Gerroald for your reply. Given the severity of the problem and the disruption it’s causing, at the moment, I’m just deactivating Wordfence on all sites we manage and replacing it with an alternative security plugin.

Once access to the sites is restored there may be a chance to get to the bottom of what happened to Wordfence.

I will share the information you requested in due course. I can say now the sites affected are all on Siteground shared hosting. What might be relevant is that yesterday they performed an infrastructure upgrade and migrated our account to a new server in their Google facility in London. So perhaps it’s the migration (including new IP address) that has caused the issue with Wordfence?

We are also having a similar problem here and I will submit an error diagnostic after clients do their work. I do *not* have 5.4.2 yet but in the last few days have not been able to clear a blocked login, and now also the following URL is inaccessible: (it says access denied if i try to do it manually).

    /wp-admin/admin.php?page=WordfenceWAF#top#blocking

    Hey @cranleydavid,

The issue you were experiencing may have been resolved in the recent 7.4.8 release. We haven’t heard back from you in a while, so I’ve gone ahead and marked this thread as resolved.

Please feel free to open another thread if you’re still having issues with Wordfence.

@hongpong – I believe we’re working with you on your issue in a different thread. If I’m mistaken, and you’re still experiencing this can you please open a new thread?

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

Hi Gerroald, I reset the plugin settings entirely and was able to clear up the main issue. Thanks and best regards.
