sizing pics in front sliders

Whenever I scale or crop the pics in the front sliders they actually get bigger on the page?? Help! Also is there a way to offset the pic from the title? For example, on the ‘trophy’ slider, how could I have the pic on the right and the words on the left or visa versa? Thanks!! Learning…
