In the carousel slider type the “slide size” value defines how big your slides are:

and then how your image is inside the slide is based on the “Slide background image fill” option: https://smartslider3.helpscoutdocs.com/article/56-slider-settings-general
where defaultly the “Fill” is chosen, which will make your image to be as big, as it has to be to cover your whole slide.
Then you can add links for example at the slide’s setting:
