Slider too big

Hi there, thanks so much for this fantastic theme. I love it!

I am trying to adjust the height (and possibly the width) of the slider itself. I find that it’s just too big for my purposes. I read through a few threads and gathered that this is not easily done. My question is; would it be easier to just disable the slider function altogether and then install a slider plugin that can be more easily customized? It seems like a waste not to use the native slider feature that comes with this theme, but I don’t want to complicate things for myself unnecessarily.
