Slow Load Time

Since adding an image menu (6 images) to my homepage, my site load time is very slow (according to pingdom). If I remove the image menu, I do get a boost in speed (but I would prefer to keep this menu). Do you have any suggestions for me? Is there an ideal size for the images in the image menu?
