Slow loading of images

    Although our galleries contain images always less than 200kb in size (and often less than 100kb) the lightbox always takes 2 or 3 seconds to load each photo.

    In 3 different browsers the developer tools are so confusing (and very different to each other) I’m none the wiser as to why. Chrome timeline even appears to show each image loading twice.

    Since your feature request/feedback page links return 404s I’ll ask here – can you implement preloading? Is there anything else I can do to speed up the lightbox?

    Hi, it took a bit of searching, as the support page linked to in the sticky post at the top of this forum did not have any 404 links, but I found the other page in the wiki I’m guessing you were referring to and fixed those links. Thanks!

    Loading time is determined by the visitor’s and your site’s connection speeds. In my testing, it took an average of 0.8-1.1 seconds to download each image. Once downloaded, the browsers needs a bit of time to render and display them, so total time may indeed be close to 2 seconds per image.

    You can also disable the lightbox’s animations via SLB’s options page to make the lightbox appear snappier (as no time is spent on transitions/animations).

    Yes it was the Wiki.

    Given the small file size of the images it’s surprising they take that long to download. When we used Lightbox Galleries EWSEL, the galleries seemed faster. It’s only real drawback is not displaying captions.
    I’ve temporarily re-enabled it. See if you think it’s quicker or not.

    I don’t know how animations got switched on, it’s always the first thing I turn off in a lightbox. It hasn’t made a difference though.

    Anyway, preloading would be a great idea! Not for the whole page but after, say, clicking on an image in a gallery, for the adjacent images in that gallery.
