I have 2 sites running on a multisite installation. Both are using W3 Total Cache, which has provided a significant performance boost to both sites. The “secondary” site is mapped using WordPress MU Domain Mapping.

The performance (page load speed) of the domain mapped site is significantly slower than the unmapped site, and I don’t know if this is a normal trade-off with multisite or domain mapping? Any suggestions pointing me in the right direction will be appreciated.

The unmapped site is https://trianglehomesuccess.com/ I’m happy with the performance of this site on a shared host.

The mapped site is https://trianglenewhome.com/ This site is a tad sluggish, and I would like to find a way to improve the performance.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!

    Rob

Ipstenu & Andrea- Thanks so much for the good information. There are 2 google scripts on this page for the map and directions. When I get a chance I’ll take them off, one at a time, and see what happens.

Bottom line: I am completely happy with the performance of the main site and would like the domain mapped site to perform just as well. We have a very fast internet connection (17mbps downloads) so I know that if pages are loading slower than I’d like here, it’s gonna be even slower for others.

I’ll let you know what happens when I take that google script out.

OK, so I removed the external google code, and no real change, so still no closer to an answer as to why the domain mapped sub-site:

    1. Pages load slower
    2. White background while loading

it’s the nature of the internet rather than WP. Most of it is a perception issue

When switching pages on the main site, even when there is a delay loading, the current page never goes blank. On site 2, when you click on a new page, the current page immediately goes white while the new page is loading. I’m not the only one experiencing this. It is discussed here and here.

Don’t concentrate so much on the YSlow. Use the site. Is it usable? Does it feel fast?

This isn’t about scores, this is about what I see. I’m just trying to figure out why two very similar sites on the same install perform so differently.

I know the white screen is frustrating, but it really is a page load issue. Yes, really.

I do see a white screen all the time on almost all the pages I visit across the entire internet. because I live in Podunk Canada and can’t get a decent internet hookup from here. ?? We went over it in the other threads.

There’s a number of factors that can slow down your site – even yes, domain mapping – and adding them all up can lead to a lag you can actually see. As for domain mapping, it won’t be the plugin itself, but how many dns hops everything needs to go through to get to your site.

If you’re parking domains in cpanel then yeah – that’s one more step. If you’ve got a vs or dedicated where you can manage this more appropriately, then it clears up a bit.

    (see https://wpmututorials.com. it’s a mapped domain.)

I keep hitting your mapped domain and see an improvement today.

Andrea- Thanks for all the follow-up- much appreciated. Took out the google map iframe, and that helps a bit, but I do need a map on that page, so I need to find maybe a plugin that isn’t too intrusive.

Or loads in a different spot, like after the rest of the page instead of before everything else. ??

This makes sense, and is what I suspected all along. Of my 3 WordPress sites, the domain-mapped subsite is the only one that exhibits the white screen between page loads, even when the pages load quickly. I should point out that the issue is not really the page load speed, but what I see when any page loads- fast, slow or in between. It’s not a functional problem, just something I really dislike. One day, when I have some time (ha ha) I’ll move this site to its own installation.

Can anyone give me more insight on how W3TC causes issues here?

I don’t think so. It seems more a function of how servers load up cached pages.

So in every case this issue is being reported about a shared hosting account?

I don’t think it’s related to W3TC at all. The issue is no longer relevant for me as I no longer use multisite.

Oh I can reproduce a ‘flash of white’ on my VPS, but it’s directly related to APC ??

So there’s nothing we can do here? Do you know what APC is doing at that moment?
