Slower website database connection error with Munding theme?

  • Hi Everyone,

    I’m having a few problems with a wordpress site i’m working on at the moment.

    While using the purchased theme Munding my site has had two problems:

    1) The site becomes extremely slow
    2) Sporadically I get an error message that states: ‘Error Establishing a Database Connection’

    As soon as I change switch my theme to something else, all of these errors disappear. I’d really like to use the purchased theme, so is there any way to fix this?

    There is tool that can help you understand what might be having an issue loading. It’s free and it’s at https://tools.pingdom.com

    If you were to share your site’s url, we could run it for you..but since you have not, you can run it yourself by adding your url into the window on the page.

    The tools will show a “waterfall” of everything that is loading or slow to load, and this will give clues about what’s going on.

    I currently have the Munding theme up, and according to the pingdom tool the site is 95% slower than other websites tested! I’m not totally sure what to do with the results given.

    There are many tutorials out there about how to speed up your page loading (do a Google search for more information). However, as you are using a commercial theme, you need to ask your theme’s vendor for help in implementing the information from these tutorials. After all, that’s part of what you paid for.

    I tested your site and indeed…there is some tragic problem with the initial page load. 18 seconds …but your site is very small and there is no content.

    I suspect, because you are on Bluehost (which is very reliable) that there is some basic problem or configuration error.

    Here is what I would try:

    1) Use the default twentytwelve or twentythirteen or twentyfourteen theme and test again at pingdom.com/tools/

    if your speed dramatically increases… then the issue is likely with that theme. Do a complete delete of the theme, and install the latest version from scratch. Or… switch to something else..there’s nothing so special about this theme that you can’t replicate with other themes.

    2) If you don’t find the speed increases, then one has to consider the hosting site configuration. I cannot imagine what would be causing the issue other than perhaps a firewall, an .htaccess misdirection, or some other kind of memory problem.

    Have you setup anything special or unique on your WP installation site? I see you only have one plugin (contact form 7) so this is really not typical.

    The easiest fix, in our experience, would be to do a quick backup of the site and put it up on one of our sandbox servers that we know to be properly configured. This would reveal a lot about anything that can’t be attributed to your theme or plugins.
