• Dear guys!

First of all thank you for your amazing theme!

I have some questions and I really hope you can help me…

I know that when I decide which will be my ‘Homepage’ I have just to go to the ‘customizer’, select ‘Static Front Page’, select ‘A static page’ and then Select my ‘Frontpage’ (and well also the postpage)… Till there everything excellent!

My doubt is that, the page I have chosen to be my Homepage (or Frontpage) has already a “SLUG”, I have tried to cancel this SLUG but without success ?? So as per all I have read, I know that the “Homepage has to have NO SLUGS” in order to not confuse Google and also because of your SEO…!, etc.

However, I have also realized that once I have selected my Front page with your easy customizer, when I go to the web I see just the URL (without the SLUG) and so that seems ok!, but when I go to the editor in WordPress the SLUG is still there!!! and I don’t know how to erase it from there! I can just change it by another SLUG… but not cancel it…! Please help!

So trying to resume my questions are:

    – Does this SLUG I can’t erase (in the editor) affects my SEO Ranking?
    – Why I don’t see the SLUG in the web? Do you do something like a 301 or you just ‘delete’ any SLUG when I select the Front Page (Homepage) as the ‘Static Page’ with your ‘customizer’?
    – What happens if I just “change” the SLUG (not cancel it)? Does this change may affect my SEO Ranking I have gained in the last year? (due to Google may understand it like a new link?)

    * In the web I just see: https://gmc-peru.com/
    * But in the WP editor I see the following picture (please open the pic): https://gmc-peru.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Slug.png

Just something else, I’ve also tried to erase the “title” (you will see in the pic attached) in order to cancel the mentioned SLUG in the editor… but what I’ve obtained is to have “2 slashes at the end” https://gmc-peru.com// , so this is not neither a solution… :S

I really thank you in advance, because I’m really confuse in this!

    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Cesar

  • Hello Cesar,

I’m not sure why Quick Edit section shows that slug. Normal Edit screen shows home page URL that can’t be changed, I believe that this is the default behavior because static front page permalink seems to be safely redirected to home page (I didn’t check the WordPress code to make sure, just tried to use static front page permalink on my local Sydney install).

Showing that slug in Quick Edit section looks like a WordPress bug, so I kindly suggest you to report it. You can read about reporting WordPress bugs here:

    Hi Roman!

Thank you for your prompt reply! (I have left the other post in AThemes…)

About the issue is happening not only in the Quick Edit, but also in the Normal Editor… Please see attached pic: https://gmc-peru.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/Inside-Editor.png

Just to be a little bit more sure, with this new info, do you still thinking it may be is a WP Bug?

    Thanks again!

    Hi again!

Furthermore, what I’m also realizing is that, when I create a “New Page” (from ‘0’) and I write just the “Title” of this new Page, immediately and automatically the “permalink” creates an SLUG with this title! And what is worst, then it is impossible to cancel this SLUG!

As I explained first, the best I reached to do is to ‘change’ this SLUG or better when I cancel the “Title” I obtain a ‘slash’ (/) as the new SLUG (instead of https://gmc-peru.com/ I obtain https://gmc-peru.com//) ! Is it “Normal”??

So I have more than one new doubt now…

    1. Is this a WP BUG?
    2. When you build what you want to be your Homepage (or Static Front Page)… It has “NOT to have a ‘Title'”? (in order to avoid the automatic creation of a SLUG in the permalink by WP)?
    3. What do I have to do to cancel the SLUG from the “WP Editor” of my “actual Homepage” (that has this SLUG more than one year…)
    4. And if I reach to “erase” this famous SLUG from the “WP Editor” of my “actual Homepage”… My SEO Ranking will be affected? (due is a “new link” Google may will read again…) Or Google SEO just see the URL and not the SLUG, specially in the ‘Homepage’?

    * Just a friendly reminder, also if is already clear: When I go to the ‘Web’ I don’t see any SLUG… I just see the URL of the Homepage: https://gmc-peru.com/ But when I go to the Normal Editor and to the Quick Editor the SLUG is always there as I have already explained…

    Thanks a lot again!

Me again… Also if I create a “New Page” (from ‘0’) without “Title” immediately and automatically the “permalink” creates an “numeric SLUG” also impossible to cancel… So still now I can NOT create neither a ‘New Page’ without a SLUG, in order to have a clear “Homepage without any SLUG”

    Hello Cesar,

    1. Considering the new info, I don’t think that your particular issue is a WordPress bug.

    2. I think that all pages should have some title, including the page that is used as a static front page.

    3. I’m not sure what you mean, please describe this more precisely.

    4. I don’t know if that page was redirected all that time, so I’m not sure about that.

You can try to temporarily deactivate all your plugins except Sydney Toolbox and Page Builder by SiteOrigin, and see if it helps.

    Kind Regards, Roman.

    Hello Roman,

    Thanks for your answer,

The 3rd question was, because I know (before read some blogs) that what is recommended is that the “Homepage” (Static Frontpage) has to has ‘NO SLUGS’, just the URL… Am I right?

And if so, as I’ve explained several times, I ‘can not’ create any Page ‘without an SLUG’, because everytime I put a tittle, the permalink take it to create immediately and automatically a SLUG, and also if I don’t put any Title, the permalink creates always a SLUG, in this case a numeric SLUG…

So, in this order, is not possible for me to have a “clear” Homepage with “just” the URL, due it always will have an SLUG created automatically by the permalink…

    Hello Cesar,

The slug itself shouldn’t be a problem because the permalink of the page that is used as a static home page should be redirected to home page automatically. It doesn’t work in that way in your case, as far as I understand.

Did you try to temporarily deactivate all your plugins except Sydney Toolbox and Page Builder by SiteOrigin?

    Kind Regards, Roman.

    Hi Roman,

I hope the same you are telling me… However I don’t have it clear… I’ll try to temporarily deactivate all your plugins as per your advice… I’ll inform you.

    Thank you again!

Okay Cesar, leave here a note if you need more help.

    Kind Regards, Roman.
