Slug of duplicated product URL is -copy, -copy-2, -copy-3 – need to change

When I product is duplicated/copied it gets an ugly url with “-copy” added. This gets worse, the more times a product is copied, becoming -copy, -copy-2, -copy-3 – etc etc.
How can we prevent this so URLs remain “pretty”. Ideally the product should be connected to the Vendor so it does not need to have “-copy”. eg
/store-A/product/product-name/
/store-B/product/product-name/
/store-c/product/product-name/Not;
/product/product-name/
/product/product-name-copy/
