I have read the Open Letter, and I think that the complexity of the version 2.x is not a big problem. You have crated a better and more powerfull plugin. But you don’t understand that it is not compatible with previous versions. You maybe have spent a lot of time to provide that compability, but in some cases it is very hard to do or imposible at all. So why does new version of plugin have to be compatible with the older ones? I think you should follow a few simple steps:

    1. Drop 1.x legacy support.
    2. State clear that the new version of plugin is NOT COMPATIBLE with previous vesions.
    3. Release special tools for file system and database conversion.
    4. Publish “HOW TO” instructions about upgrading 1.x to 2.x.
    5. Publish very detailed documentation for 2.x versions so developers can easily understand how to implement custom functionality to 2.x

    That’s all.
