    Theres a filter inside the code
    $showAvatars = apply_filters('widget_avatar', $instance['showAvatars']);
    you can use this to set widget_avatar to true and you’ll see this avatars.
    I’ll update the FAQ section for this feature.

    I forgot. This option can be controlled via the widget. it has an option if avatars should be used or not. so no filter is necessary.
