Hi @jfairchild01
I hope you’re well today!
If the image that you download directly from the page doesn’t seem to be smaller after optimization, it usually means that
– either this particular image wasn’t/couldn’t be optimized for some reason
– or this particular size (as in registered image sizes) was not set to be optimized – this is especially common in case when original full size images are used; they aren’t optimized by default until relevant option is enabled in bulk-smushing
– or there’s a conflict/clash caused by other image optimization tool on site/server.
Would you mind sharing a link to some example page on your site with such images that are claimed to be optimized but you see they aren’t? We’d like to take a look.
As for PageSpeed:
Note please that if optimized images are not really used on site (e.g thumbnails are optimized but not full size images but full size images are loaded) – optimization won’t make any difference.
If optimized images are really used on site – whether it affects the score or not and how much, it really depends on the specific site setup. Images aren’t used as a factor for score calculation. They can only affect it indirectly, for example – if making them smaller causes site to respond faster. But there are also multiple other factors that affect that. Sometimes even the best optimization (regardless of whether it’s Smush or some other plugin) won’t make any difference in score, sometimes optimization alone can make a big difference. It’s really very individual to the site and depends on my other aspects too.
Kind regards,
Adam
