I started using SmartCrawl on one of my sites recently, and up until this morning was very happy with it. However, I’m now getting randomly logged out of the site, and it’s happening a lot. Sometimes when I go to the Posts list, sometimes when I try to save a Draft post, and sometimes when I’m not doing anything at all.

So I followed the usual WordPress troubleshooting process, deactivating plugins until the problem went away. And the problem goes away when I deactivate SmartCrawl. Re-enabling SmartCrawl causes the problem to return. I’m willing to believe that this is not actually a bug in SmartCrawl, but just a compatibility issue with another plugin, but for now, I have no choice but to return to the setup I used before SmartCrawl.

Note: I understand that experiencing repeated WordPress logouts usually points to a cookie problem. But I cleared my browser cache and all site cookies, and the problem remained.

Is anyone else seeing this problem? Any ideas?

    Hi @jrivett,

I hope you are doing well today!

This indeed sounds like a conflict with another active plugin or theme on your website. Here are some recommendations to troubleshoot the issue:

    1. Isolate the plugin: Try to deactivate other plugins (other than SmartCrawl), and then see if the problem persists. This can help you find out the conflicting plugin.
    2. Theme conflict: Try to change your theme to one of the default WordPress themes and see if the problem is still there.
    3. Error logs: Check your WordPress website’s error logs for any clues.
    4. Update SmartCrawl: If you haven’t done so already, make sure your SmartCrawl plugin is up-to-date.
    5. Hosting issue: Check with your hosting provider to see if there’s a session or cookie problem. They can give you useful guidance.

Additionally, do note that this issue can also be caused due to inconsistent internet connection or your WordPress site URL (WordPress Address and Site Address) may not be the same.

Remember, always backup your website before making any changes.

    Kind regards,
    Zafer

By disabling other plugins, I discovered that there appears to be an incompatibility of some kind between SmartCrawl and the Duo Two-Factor Authentication plugin.

I’m able to reliably reproduce the logout problem if both SmartCrawl and the Duo plugin are enabled, and I save a Post as a Draft.

I need to use the Duo plugin, so I’ve re-enabled that one and disabled SmartCrawl for now.

I’m hoping that I’ve provided enough information that you can reproduce the problem at your end now, and fix the problem if possible.

Should I report this to the Duo developers as well? The source of the problem could be in Duo or SmartCrawl, or even both.

    Hi @jrivett,

Are you referring to the following plugin:

    https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/duo-wordpress/

Or some other plugin I should be looking at? I’m afraid, the above plugin hasn’t been updated or in development for over 2 years, so double-check if you are referring to the above plugin or not.

I’m afraid, trying to troubleshoot within an outdated plugin won’t be ideal, as it can cause more issues down the road.

Any specific feature you are using as 2FA in the above plugin? Maybe you could check and see whether using Defender and its 2FA feature as an alternative would help in such an instance.

Please check and advise if I’m missing out anything.

    Best Regards,

    Nithin

Yikes. I hadn’t noticed that the Duo plugin was so out of date. I’ll stop bugging you guys and direct my attention to the Duo plugin developers.
