Smooth Slider Navigation Button Images

I would like to use a mini-thumb as the navigation button for each image in Smooth Slider. It would appear that in Smooth Slider > Settings > Basic Settings the “Custom Images for Navigations” or the “Fixed Images for Navigation” would do that, but I can’t figure out how to make that work. There doesn’t seem to be any documentation to help. If I select that option and Save Changes, the number buttons become a “matrix” of numbers for each slide.
