I have recently upgraded from wordpress 3.6 to 4.1 without a hitch, however since the update I no longer receive emails.

The two plugins I use are Ninja Forms and WP-Mail-SMTP which were working correctly before the update. I have checked the SMTP details with my I.T. team and they confirm they are correct, but sending a test email results in bool(false) authentication failed – incorrect username/password.

I have also set up a mail test as specified in this post – https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/wp_mail-not-working?replies=6 which does fail making me think that the ‘from address’ is incorrect, but i’m not sure how to fix it.

I’ve also noticed that my wp-includes/class-phpmailer.php file has changed since the upgrade. Is this the file I should be editing? or should I be editing the functions file instead?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • Can you post your configuration? Specifically, what is your From email domain and what is your SMTP server?

Hi, thank you for getting back to me and sorry about the late reply.

If by ‘from email domain’ you mean the from email address then this is [email protected].

The SMTP server is an internal IIS 7.5 server, although i’m not sure if that’s what you mean?

    Cheers

Hmm.. I thought maybe you had a Gmail address but yours is Office 365.

Well, I would take the error at face value, either your username or password is incorrect. Can you still log into Microsoft webmail? If you think the password is absolutely right, then maybe Microsoft is telling you it’s time to switch from Passwords to OAuth 2.0? I know Google does this all the time but I’ve never heard of Microsoft doing it.

Ok I will check the username and password with my I.T dept again, however the copy of the files and database before the upgrade show the same username/password so they should be correct.

Unfortunately I don’t have the permissions to look into the webmail, but have not needed to before.

I still think that the issue may be to do with one of the core files, such as the class-phpmailer file mentioned in the first post.

Guess I will have to keep looking for a solution…

    Fixed!

The issue was in fact with the class-phpmailer.php file. Since the upgrade all smtp information was missing from this file.

Copied old file (before upgrade) to replace incorrect one and it now works again, although smeg knows what caused this file to change from the original.
