I can send a test mail successfully. But I get prompted with this error in the WordPress admin.

EMAIL DELIVERY ERROR: the plugin WP Mail SMTP v2.2.1 logged this error during the last time it tried to send an email:

    Mailer: ?vrig SMTP
    SMTP Error: data not accepted.

I’ve reviewed the settings and also talked to my webhost. The settings are good. What can be wrong when I’m able to send a test mail successfully?

SMTP user name is equal to From email. I don’t use the force option.

  • Hi @rocketeer76,

Thanks for reaching out. The error usually appears if the email is sent with an incorrect format/header etc. Most likely is the ‘From Email’ of the email that is generating this error doesn’t match the SMTP username. If you don’t force From Email from WP Mail SMTP, the ‘From Email’ is usually set by the plugins sending the emails. You’ll need to identify this email and plugin sending the email and see the technical details. Email logging plugins might help if you encounter the issue again or your SMTP provider might have logs of all the emails.

    I hope this helps!

Hi @rocketeer76 – We haven’t heard from you in about a week, so I’m going to go ahead and mark this ticket resolved. If you still have questions, though, please feel welcome to continue the conversation.

When using the force option, the error disappeared. Thanks!

    Hello,

I’ve got the same message whereas few hours before it worked well.

I have it when I send an email from Contact Form or when I simulate an order on WooCommerce.

I forced From Email, it worked well only the first time but not after…

    Can you help me please?

    Thank you

    Hi @jokki,

If you still get this exact error:

    SMTP Error: data not accepted.

after checking the “Force From Email” option. Then, there’s some invalid/incorrect email data for example header in the sent email that your SMTP server does not accept. Some SMTP providers such as Yahoo also do not custom “Reply-to” header. You might want to identify the exact email that is creating such an error and troubleshoot the header of that email. Email logging plugins might be helpful in this case.

    I hope this helps!

    Hii @sanzeeb3,

    Thank you for your answer.

I use an email provided by OVH from my own domain. I have the problem with all emails from WooCommerce and Contact Form.

    Do you have an idea?

    HAve a nice day

    Hi @jokki,

Could you please make sure the “From Email” in WP Mail SMTP matches your SMTP username and you have “Force From Email” checked? If you’re still getting that exact error message described in the original questions, please let me know the SMTP settings you’re using or share the screenshot from the WP Mail SMTP settings area and the list of the activated plugins in your site?

    Thanks!

    Hi @sanzeeb3 + co

I am having a similar issue!

    Force from email – Checked
    SMTP test email woks

    I get this error:
    SMTP Error: data not accepted.

However, if I use my own email in WP Forms it doesn’t give me the error.

    Thanks!

    Hi @maxchrusciel,

Could you please share the notification settings in your forms and the WP Mail SMTP settings? Are you using your own email in WPForms “From Email” or “Send To Email Address” field? Either way, that should not be an issue if you have forced from email from WP Mail SMTP.

    Thanks!

Very weird, everything works fine if the email I enter in WP Forms is the email I want to send to… the moment I change that error and no send.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi @maxchrusciel,

    Thanks for the details!

the moment I change that error and no send.

Could you please share what email address you change to and send a test email from WP Mail SMTP to the same email addresses?

Generally, an empty email subject should not be an issue, but there’s something your SMTP provider isn’t accepting. Possibly your SMTP account isn’t able to send emails to an external email address because it’s still not activated?

    Thanks!

Test email works when sending from cath…@aol.com to maxchru…@gmail.com.

However, when I send from cath…@aol.com to cath…@aol.com and having entered these details:
    https://gyazo.com/56864235d6aa63466841bcb8e823a721

    I get this error:
    https://gyazo.com/ee31c051e456a13cbc45e1aa43e5f1f4

Activated in what sense? The email has been used for years before now, or is there another step to activation?

    Hi @maxchrusciel,

so if you have the cath…@aol.com email address set as the “From Email” and the “SMTP Username” in the WP Mail SMTP (with the “Force From Email” checkbox enabled) and you send a Test Email in our Test Email tab, to the “cath…@aol.com” address, do you get an error?

Or do you get an error only when trying to submit the contact form?

What I suspect: your SMTP server does not allow a reply-to email address that is different than your From Email/SMTP Username: “cath…@aol.com”. With your current WPForms setup, it looks like you are setting the reply-to address to the email address that your visitor is inputting for the contact form.

Please remove the reply-to value in the WPForms settings (remove this value: {field_id="1"} + save the contact form). And try to submit the contact form.

Let me know how it goes.

    Take care!

    Removing the reply-to field worked!

Thanks very much guys @capuderg + @sanzeeb3 awesome work!
