Hello. I am attempting to use Smush (Free version) to optimize images upon upload. But I notice that when using the staging service on Siteground hosting, Smush isn’t working automatically when uploading images to WordPress.

Of coarse after upload, if you view the image, you can click the Smush button and it will do it manually. However the automatic Smush upon upload does not work.

I can confirm Smush works upon upload as it should on my other non-staging sites.

Could it have anything to do with the fact that the staging sites are hosted as a subdomain? Example https://staging1.mysite.com. This is just the way that the staging works at Siteground and perhaps this sub-domain/url issue is a factor.

    Hi @neverthejetsetter,

I tested Smush on Siteground staging site and had no issues with auto-smush on there, it seems that there’s something specific on your end that’s causing this.

Can you tell me if you have any additional plugins on your staging site that are not on your live site?
Or perhaps they are but are not the same version?
If you do can you try deactivating such plugins and give it another try after that?
Are there any other differences between your live and staging sites?

Could you check with SiteGround support if there are any server logs about blocked requests coming from WPMU DEV or Smush?

    Cheers,
    Predrag

Hello, I actually have no other plugins on the staging site that differ from the live site. Additionally, I even turned all plugins off (except for Smush) and it still will not work automatically on upload.
I am waiting to hear back from Siteground regarding the server logs.
    Thanks you.

Hello @wpmudev-support1, I received this message from Siteground:

I have reviewed the logs and there are no blocked requests.

Most probably, the plugin is not working on our staging setup due to our custom setup.

We use the Apache’s modules to perform this on a server-side level. Thus, for example, the siteURL in WordPress should stay domain.com even for the staging copy. Please do not reconfigure the applications to use stagingN.domain.com for siteURL as it would not work. All the requests to the application will be processed as they have been made to the real hostname.

@wpmudev-support1 and just to confirm, when you say that the plugin does work on Siteground staging, you are referring to the Free plugin? Not the paid “Pro” version?

    Hi @neverthejetsetter,

Thanks for getting back to us, but to be honest I’m not that clear on their response, that doesn’t really explain why it would work on my staging site and not on yours, but let me pass this over to our devs and see if they have any further thoughts on it.

I did make sure to test with the free version, but that doesn’t really make any difference since API requests are the same for both versions.

    Hi @neverthejetsetter,

I just found a similar report to this but that was over a year and a half ago, and we release an update for that back in May of 2017.
Can you please confirm that you have the latest version running on your staging site?

    Cheers,

    Hello @neverthejetsetter,

I’m marking this topic as resolved due to recent inactivity. Feel free to post back any update and we can re-open it and carry on troubleshooting! ??

    Thank you,
    Dimitris

I’m experiencing the same issue on both staging and production sites – auto-smush doesn’t work at all, I have to manually smush any images I upload. I’ve checked with my host (Flywheel) and they report no errors.
