I have 1 domain hosted with hostgator currently that has WordPress on it. I just bought a 2nd domain for WordPress website number 2. It is also on hostgator and was put onto the same vps server. I’m trying to figure out the directory structure. If I log in via FTP into my first website will I be able to access the 2nd from the same ftp or do I need to have a separate ftp login?

The domain is still in propagation for 2 days so I can’t access it. I have files on the first I wish to copy over to the 2nd and trying to figure out the best way to do this. I assume one WordPress site cannot access the 2nd and if someone were to log into one they don’t have access to the 2nd correct?

  • Everything that you’re asking will depend on how your VPS is set up. Are you using a control panel like Plesk or cPanel, or is it a bare-bonsed *nix server set up with Apache?

It is cpanel. Actually 1 cpanel for each domain.

It’ll also depend even on the OS you’re using (as different OSes organize things differently), as well as the permissions of the user account you’re using for the FTP access.

    So many unknowns!

I’ll recommend you get in touch with your host for help with this.

But if you absolutely rather not deal with your host ?? … kindly provide the two domains in question and let’s see what we might be able to decipher from them.

Centros 7.x can’t remember the specific version. HostGator.

    domain1.com
    domain2.com

Both sites are heavily under construction still so don’t expect much to work. ??

I do have root access. It’s a VPS server.

Sorry, I didn’t see your response before I hit submit ??

If you have a separate cPanel account for each domain, then each cPanel account is a separate FTP credential for one domain only.

So when you login to FTP with DomainA’s cPanel account (or sub-account), you’ll only see the files for DomainA.

To access files for DomainB, you’ll need to use DomainB’s cPanel credentials.

Of course, if you log in with the root account or some other privileged system account, then you may see all files and directories on the server.

If they are under two separate cPanel accounts, then you’ll have two separate FTP accounts (the standard FTP for each account) and two different home folder locations.

As what you are asking is related to cPanel, you’d be better off asking more in a forum dedicated to cPanel instead of WordPress.

Guess why I am asking is after buying the 2nd domain I had to go into HostGator’s WHM to create the 2nd account and cpanel so it sort of feels like the two are connected. This is all a bit confusing to me. Thank you for the clarifications.

I think I’m getting the WHM and the cpanel confused. From the WHM I can access both.

WHM (Web Host Manager) is the actual software that is installed on the SERVER, and is used for managing the server itself and administering individual cPanel hosting accounts.

If you only used shared hosting previously, you only had a cPanel account. But your host created that cPanel account from WHM (either manually or using a hosting billing and automation software like WHMCS).

Now that you have your own VPS, you have both WHM and cPanel.

I think I’m getting the WHM and the cpanel confused. From the WHM I can access both.

Most likely you logged into WHM with the root user, or some other root-level system user (other than the cPanel account). If you were to access FTP with the same root or root-level account (don’t do this!!!) you’d see all files on the server, including the directories and files for both domains. So what you see in FTP depends on what user account you’re using to log in.
