  • Hi Kendra and thanks for contacting us! ??

We do have the combining sprites down as a future implementation but unfortunately I don’t have a release date at this time when that may be.

However, what I’m seeing on the site is that the TTFB is over a second. TTFB is Time To First Byte is the amount of time it takes after the client sends an HTTP GET request to receive the first byte of the requested resource from the server.

This is probably the best place to start. But there are other areas we can also make suggestions for as well such as:

    1. Image Optimization for all images prior to cropping them in the slider
    2. Adding Expiring Headers to your htaccess file. You can read more about that here.
    3. You can remove query strings from JS and CSS files by using this plugin: https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/remove-query-strings-from-static-resources/
    4. Minifying the CSS for the site is recommended. Plugins like BWP Minify or Autoptimize are an easy way to implement this. If you choose to enable JavaScript minify, be sure to thoroughly check the functionality of your site as this can break JavaScript dependent plugins. If this breaks a plugin you can simply disable the JavaScript minification.

Please let me know if that helps! ??

    Thanks

Thank you so much for your quick reply!

I am still fairly new to the technical side of blogging so please forgive my ignorance ??. When you mention TTFB do you mean that my hosting provider might be the source of the problem?

I use Siteground and through them Cloudflare, which was recommended for speeding up my site. I also have previously taken optimization steps such as using the query string plugin and minifying CSS.

I forgot to mention that GTMetrix showed specific images that should be compressed and most of them were the ones mentioned above that make up all the parts of the slider. I only have one image uploaded (basically using the slider to show a static image) and dont have access to those others to compress them.

I will take a look at expiring headers and look through my Cloudflare settings again.

Thank you for all your help,
    Kendra

    Anytime @kendrkaye ??

Yes I apologize for any confusion, the hosting (and in some cases Cloudflare can be the cause as well) is what I was referring to.

If you need any other assistance, please know we’re always here! ??
