• Media library folders (or lack of thereof) are being loudly discussed every now and then here or elsewhere and position of all sides involved is quite understandable.
Perhaps there is a solution – add an option to disable media library altogether and post images linking directly from server without any database registration or abstraction layer at all. I mean – those (like me) whining about media management usually also are those not needing drag-and-drop interface and are more happy with “ugly” ftp and file copying than browser upload and database management.
I wonder how hard it’d be to implement such a plugin if this seems unacceptable for WordPress for some reason.

Are you saying you have found plugins that organise your media folder already and aren’t satisfied with their UI?

To do what? For example: I have a /downloads/ folder, then I simply use the page/post editor to insert my ‘mysite.com/path/downloads/filename.abc’ link wherever I wish and even within a shortlink for triggering a downloads plugin that cares nothing at all about whether WordPress even knows that file exists.

@andrew Haven’t really found anything yet. Over few years I’ve done numerous researches on this topic testing lots and lots of plugins without working results. Haven’t finished testing what have been made/updated this year yet and “WP Media Folder” seems like a good candidate, at least regarding UI part, though commercial.

However ideally folders should be physical, which made me think that “a switch” to bypass media manager abstraction layer and link images as external files would be maintenance free once and for all solution. Thumbs etc. becomes a problem of the user, but priorities differ and thumbs are easier to solve.

@leejosepho Mainly images, but yup, that’s the idea. Probably won’t be a problem to filter image links into images. But do you copy links manually? It’s ok for a file, but not so much when there is more of them.

Yes, and I have yet to ever need to deal with more than two or three at a time. However, I can see how convenient it could be to have a plugin that catalogues all media links and then makes them “clickably available” in the same way the Media Library serves the actual files.
