    I had someone that set up my wordpress site for me and was also the admin person. I recently took that over from her and she gave me (reluctantly) the admin password to sign in.
    I can get into the dashboard but cannot access all areas…I am able to click on posts, etc., but cannot click on pages, categories or tags to edit my pages and remove her from the footer.
    How do I retrieve access to these?

    Are you able to access the Users section of the Dashboard? If so, does it say “Administrator” next to your username, or something else?

    No I do not see a Users section.

    You need to contact the person to give you access to the admininstrator position. If you have access to the server then you can change it this way also.

    The woman who did this claims that she gave us the passwords for the admin position and will not help further (long story). When she originally handed over access to this all of my pages that were created by her were gone and we had to contact our host (myhost) to find a backup.

    So it sounds like my only other option is to do a whole new website?

    Ok, so it sounds like you’re only either an Editor or Author, not an Administrator.

    Hopefully you have access to your hosting provider’s control panel. If so, and if you are not using Multisite, access your database via phpMyAdmin (most hosting providers offer this in their control panel), go to the wp_users table and find the row for your user_login . Note the ID of this row. Now, go to the wp_usermeta table and find the wp_capabilities row for your user_id . Set the value of this row to:

    a:1:{s:13:"administrator";b:1;}

    Thank you so much James! Problem solved!!

    How do I remove the footer with the name of the person who created it?

    Thanks again! You have saved us hours of frustration.

    You’re welcome!

    You can probably edit that out of the Footer Template via Appearance -> Editor in your blog’s Dashboard.
