• Hi All,

I hope you’re all well. My site is as follows:

    https://www.taylormadewriting.com/

I have small issue that’s driving my tiny mind crazy, that maybe your more IT orientated minds can assist with – as I only normally use the interface to create posts and don’t know how to code.

If you look at the ‘feature’ images on my home page you can see that for the first 5 smaller posts (and by smaller, I mean ones below the huge main feature) they show in a rectangular format.

For images 6 and 9 they are in a perfect square format. The square format is perfect for featuring music album image art and this is how I was hoping the first 5 would show too, but for some reason – despite the fact I did everything in a seemingly similar manner when creating the posts – they are showing in the rectangular format.

I’ve tried changing the dimensions of the images, with no success.

Can you help me resolve this issue?

    Your assistance is massively appreciated.

    HAPPY VALENTINES DAY!

    Sauron79

  • Hi Sauron79. I don’t know all the ins and outs of how images are cropped when they are uploaded so this is just a guess. The theme-generated “thumb-medium” size is 520×245. If you upload a rectangular image larger than the theme “thumb-large” size of 720×340, WP will create (I think) eight image sizes when an image is uploaded; the original image, 3 default WP thumbnails and 4 theme-related-size image thumbnails. Since the posts on the home page are set to use the “thumb-medium” size, that image 520×245 thumbnail is downsized to 334×157 to fit width-wise in the post image area on the page. If you upload a square image the thumbnails are not converted to a rectangular shape. They are maintained in a square and downsized proportionately to fit with-wise in the post image area. So, your 960×960 image becomes 334×334. You can learn more about WP thumbnail cropping in this article.

Thanks for your reply but I am not sure this helps.

I want the featured images to be square not rectangular.

For the post titled “LP REVIEW: PHILIP SELWAY – WEATHERHOUSE” the featured image is 380 x 380 and in the home page shows as rectangular, which is not what I want.

For the post titled “LP REVIEW: SKY FERREIRA – NIGHT TIME, MY TIME” the featured image is 800 x 801 and in the home page shows as square, which is what I want.

But, even if I resize the “WEATHERHOUSE” featured image to the image dimensions of the “NIGHT TIME, MY TIME” image and resave it, it still does not show as square, which doesn’t make a great deal of sense to me.

I agree; it doesn’t make much sense. Personally, I think media management is one of the least explained and understood features of WP. It seems that there are several variables that go into the equation (whatever the equation is) to determine what to crop where, and which size thumbnails to create when, and which ones are used when. In your example, for instance, I think that if you define, say, “thumb-big” as 800×800, and you upload an image larger than 800×800, WP should create a thumbnail that’s 800×800, and your theme would use it by calling “thumb-big”. But I don’t know that for sure. It’s no wonder users get frustrated trying to size and minimize images, only to find that the size they thought was going to be used, isn’t.
