    Here is the afflicted site

    https://www.staging3.contingencyanalysis.com/var/

If I expand the first or last menu items (“Cover” or “Back Matter”) and click on a sub-item revealed by the expansion, the item remains expanded on the new page. This does not happen with other items in the menu. If I expand another item, and click a sub-item revealed by that expansion, the item is NOT expanded on the new page.

This behavior occurs irrespective of screen width (cell phone, tablet or desktop).

This may not be relevant, but I just added the first and last items to the menu today. The rest of the menu was constructed over six months ago (with an earlier version of WordPress and the theme).

    Thanks for any help!

OK, so I figured this out:

If you are in the WordPress menu editor page and you crate menu items with the dropdown menus that allow you to select existing posts or pages, those items will, when expanded, remain expanded when clicked. If you create a custom menu item, it will not. My menus were showing a mix of the two behaviors because I had mostly custom items but posts/pages in the first and last menu items.
