I just had a quite alarming experience on two sites using the free edition of UpdraftPlus. I needed to restore database backups from earlier today. Once I restored the backups, I found to my dismay that certain Pages were blank after the restoration was complete — their contents had been wiped. It wasn’t all pages, but it was some of them, including, to my dismay, the privacy policy pages! (Fortunately, I had offline copies of the HTML for those pages, so I was able to restore them that way.)

I have no idea why this would have happened, but it was obviously a shock, and a potentially disastrous one. Those pages were definitely not blank prior to the restoration, nor were they blank when the backup files I restored were taken earlier today!

ETA: By “blank,” I mean the pages were still there, their titles were intact, but their contents were completely gone.

Does anyone have any idea why this might have occurred and what I can do to prevent it happening again?

For reference, this is on Version 1.16.34, using the latest WordPress 5.5.3.

    Thanks!

I tested again, this time using Inspect Element in Firefox to look for script errors with the affected pages. The only error I got was:
Layout was forced before the page was fully loaded. If stylesheets are not yet loaded this may cause a flash of unstyled content. jquery.js:3:25903
    … which doesn’t seem fatal.

I installed jQuery Migrate yesterday, so I got a couple of jQuery deprecated function warnings, including:
    MouseEvent.mozPressure is deprecated. Use PointerEvent.pressure instead. tinymce.min.js:2:8856

That too doesn’t seem pertinent to the issue.

Please try to update to latest version 1.16.41.

I auto-updated shortly after the update, although I haven’t tested to see if the behavior I experienced is still occurring.

I just had to restore after an unfortunate mishap of my own making, and the issue I’m experiencing persists after the 1.16.41 update.

Can you send a copy of the backup that you used, and identify specifically at least one particular item that did not restore again at https://updraftplus.com/ask-a-pre-sales-question/ ? (Please mention my name and this thread).

What I eventually discovered with this issue is that the affected pages appear to still be in the database as they should after restoration, but something happens either during or immediately after that process that makes those specific pages invisible to the Classic Editor. (They’re visible on the front end and they’re visible in Gutenberg, but they display as completely blank and empty in the Classic Editor.) I have no idea why.

I don’t have time to delve into it further right now — I was not expecting to have to do a restore right now (which resulted from my accidentally deleting something I shouldn’t have).
