• I have been successfully using wordpress 2.1 for some time to host a blog and have built up a considerable caalog of postings. I should like to add bbpress to my site and *ideally* have it integrate with wordpress – ie users register on one and are able to log-in to both. I understand integration requires wp2.5 or above.

As a non-technical person I am very happy with the current wp version and am wondering how easily I could upgrade, whether the upgrade would retain all current posts and categories, whether it would retain the current template and tweaks that I’ve made by trial and error over time, whether there’s any risk of losing the current content (disastrous!)

Is it worth the hassle of upgrading just to achieve integation, or am I better off sticking with what works and keeping bbpress as an independent system?

  • Upgrading usually isn’t to bad but sometimes there can be issues. Before upgrading make sure to backup your files and database incase there is an issue. You would then overwrite the current WordPress files with the new ones and visit the admin for a link to upgrade the database. Your old theme should work on 2.5 with little to no tweaks and all your content should remain, but if there is a major issue there is always the backup to go back to. You should try the upgrade since 2.1 is no longer supported and no security or bugfixes will be released for it.
