EMERGENCY – While working on a post for one of my blogs, I got an e-mail saying a specific IP address has been locked out due to ‘too many attempts to open a file that doesn’t exist.’ Of course, I freaked out since I wasn’t even posting to this one. This is at 2:15 AM!!

I looked it up, they’re in POLAND. I don’t know anyone there. My site is New Dispensation Websites, https://newdispweb.com.

This is not an emergency situation and as long as you protect your site it is nothing to freak out about.

You have installed a plugin which will send you these emails. That is good as you know someone has tried to get in. Without the plugin you would not know.

In my experience, the person/scripted attack trying to get in always uses the username ‘admin’, so it is important that you do not have an account called admin on your site.

To further protect your site, you may want to implement the measures outlined at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Hardening_WordPress

Thank you; my choice of words might’ve been questionable, but after all, it was 2 AM. I took a screenshot of the IP search results, that’s why I know they were in Poland. And yes, under the circumstances of which ala-carte features I have on the site right now, the plug-in was necessary. I’m so glad that it’s working properly. And, I’m glad that you were up in the middle of the night to help people like myself that sometimes get over-excited about security issues. I will follow your advice. God Bless.
