    Within the last day or two, I noticed that the Yoast optimization area within the post editor of my WP site is displaying the error mentioned in the title. The error also says “o is not a function”. No idea what’s going on here.

    We’ve cleared all caches (theme cache, WP Rocket, Cloudflare), but nothing has resolved the issue. Any ideas?

    Hello @brodydorland

    Thanks for reaching out. Often, we see problems occur in combination with another plugin or theme. The fastest way to rule out any conflict is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Twenty-Two.

    Please test this on your development or staging site if you have one. If not, we recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin has a troubleshooting mode, which does not affect normal visitors to your site.

    If you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts

    If you feel uncomfortable doing this yourself or if this does not solve your issue, our Yoast SEO Premium plugin comes with one year of (technical) support.

    Hi! I went through your prescribed “Health Check & Troubleshooting” process. In troubleshooting mode with the Twenty Twenty-Two theme, I activated the Yoast plugin and got the following notice:

    “When enabling the plugin, wordpress-seo, a site failure occurred. Because of this the change was automatically reverted.”

    What now?

    I’m sorry you couldn’t follow the troubleshooting steps, @brodydorland . Please try the following

    • Refresh the page where you see this error using a cache refresh (reload the current page, ignoring cached content,?Shift + F5?or?Ctrl + Shift + r?in Chrome)
    • Change your theme to one of the WordPress default themes and then change back to your current theme.

    Please tag me if the issue continues after both steps

    I’ve already tried all that. Per my previous post, I’ve switched themes (in troubleshooting mode) and upon activation of the Yoast plugin, “a site failure occured”. And I’ve cleared all caches multiple times, including Cloudflare. And note that this error is happening within the Yoast module on all pages and posts, not just a particular page or post.

    Please these next steps:

    1. Install & activate the?Yoast Test Helper plugin
    2. Go to Tools > Yoast Test
    3. Locate the Yoast SEO section and click on the ‘Reset indexables tables & migrations‘, ‘Reset Prominent words calculation‘, and ‘Reset Internal link counter‘ buttons. After each click, the page will reload to confirm that the specific reset was successful.
    4. Go to SEO > Tools, and under SEO data, click the “Start SEO data optimization” button to allow Yoast to rescan your content.

    Thanks Maybellyne. I executed those steps. When I got to step #4, the initial rescan failed due to a JSON error. I didn’t get to copy the exact error message, unfortunately. I then tried the scan again and it completed successfully. But, the original error is still present on all pages/posts.

    Hi @brodydorland

    I was unable to replicate the issue on my test site. So, I would appreciate if I could get some details about your site. So can you kindly answer the following:

    Here’s a quick video showing the issue and console error. Hope that helps!

    FWIW – We’ve used the Yoast plugin for many years on this site and we’ve never had an issue. And we have not had any noteworthy updates on the site recently outside of regular WP, theme, and plugin updates.

    Quick update… After some internal troubleshooting with my development team, we’ve narrowed it down to a Mac/Chrome issue. More specifically, newer versions of Chrome. You might have an issue with your javascript code. When digging into the console error, this code snippet seems to be the culprit.

    at __unstableMarkListeningStores (data.min.js:2:22094)

    __unstableMarkListeningStores: function(e, t) { o = new Set; try { return e.call(this) } finally { t.current = Array.from(o), o = null } }

    Newer browsers are expecting it to look like?new Set();

    Thanks for the investigation! However, that code snippet is from WordPress core (well, Gutenberg to be precise): https://github.com/WordPress/gutenberg/blob/trunk/packages/data/src/registry.js#L121 — and there the call to new Set() is correct, so I do not think that is the problem. From the video above, I’m mostly interested in what the externals-components.js call refers to. Thanks in advance!

    Hey Martijn – Not sure what changed or who we have to thank, but the error magically disappeared a few days ago. We’re back to a working Yoast module!

    Oh, that’s great to hear! ??
