I’ve had the iThemes Security plugin active for several weeks now, and it worked fine. I have Version 8.0.2, and running WP Ver: 5.8.

I haven’t looked at the plugin settings or log for several days, and just now tried to look at the logs. I can no longer find the iThemes Security in the Desktop left-side menu list. If I go to the list of plugins, it shows that iThemes Security plugin is installed and active. If I click on the settings from the plugin list page, it gives me this error: Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.

I tried logging out and back into WordPress backend, and that didn’t help. I also tried to deactivate, and then activate the plugin, but also no help either.

Can you give me any suggestions as to what could have gone wrong?

I just remembered that I have changed the administrator user name and number since I installed the iThemes Security plugin.

Since the original administrator is no longer user id: 1, does that cause a problem with iThemes Security, so it thinks the the new administrator’s name (and new ID) isn’t allowed to access the settings, log, etc?

I saw another support ticket that seems like a similar situation, and you said that “We’ve made a fix in the latest version of the plugin, 8.0.2, which will correct the issue going forward”. Since I am already using version 8.0.2, and I am still experiencing this problem, can you give me a suggest on how to fix this?

Since I didn’t hear back from you with a suggestion of how to fix this, I decided to delete the plugin and reinstall it all over again.

It was a pain to have to fix all the settings again, but thankfully I had kept documentation of the settings I used last time for this client.

It all appears to be working properly now.

I’ve added my solution here, just in case there are other users that have the same issue, and so they can at least have one option to use that works.

    Thanks,

    Hi SunnyOz,

Your feedback is much appreciated by the community.

Could it be you changed the administrator user name and number in an older release than 8.0.2 ?

I think you need to make the change in the 8.0.2 release for the fix to work (which could explain why it worked the second time) ??

FYI: I went back to look at my logs, and it appears that I updated iThemes from 8.01 to 8.02 on August 12th.

The next day, on August 13th, I created a new Admin, then deleted the original Admin (Attributing all posts to the new Admin.)

The original admin was the one in effect when I updated iThemes to 8.02 version. But later when I tried to access iThemes under the new Admin, that is when I get the error. (Which means that the ‘fix’ didn’t work in my case.)

It is possible that the problem has to do with the fact that I changed the USER-ID for the new Admin user via phpMyAdmin. Maybe by changing the Database directly, iThemes doesn’t have a record of the change, and doesn’t recognize the new USER-ID as an admin user anymore?

(NOTE: It ‘worked the second time’, because I deleted the original install, and started fresh with a new install.. which would have been under the new Admin name and number, so it would naturally work properly at that point, without needing to invoke the ‘fix’ code.)

The fix included in the 8.0.2 release only applies to using the iTSec plugin Change User ID 1 feature under Security > Settings >> Tools.

Any other scenario’s (including using phpMyAdmin which is strongly NOT recommended) to change the user ID 1 AFTER the iTSec plugin is installed may break things.

    Correct.

If I go to the list of plugins, it shows that iThemes Security plugin is installed and active. If I click on the settings from the plugin list page, it gives me this error: Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page.

The error produced by the iTSec plugin Settings action link tells me that there doesn’t seem to be a capability check in the callback hooked to the WordPress core plugin_action_links filter.

Generally access to a Settings page is restricted to users having the manage_options (or manage_network_options in multisite) capability …

When a capability check is in place (just like with the Security menu option) the Settings action link is simply not available. Thus subsequent permission errors on clicking such an action link are prevented.

So looks like iThemes has some work to do in that area ??
