Follow on question: any way to combine a filtered view AND meta_key sort?

The filter:

meta_key=”medium”
meta_value=”oil”
meta_compare=”like”

The sort:

meta_key=”start_date”
meta_type=”date”
meta_order=”ASC”
orderby=”meta_value_num”

Not sure if we can accomplish both in the same shortcode.

You would have to use this filter for a query like this.

What I have been doing is just querying post_meta directly to get post IDs that match the other filter criteria and passing those into post__in on the shortcode. Kind of hacky, but it works.
