Sort members Directory by Last name, then First name?

Hi,
I need to find how to sort the members list in the Directory page by member’s Last name and then First name, but I can’t find the solution.
It looks like a very basic feature for a “Directory” page. Even more when you run a family website where a lot of members have the same name.
So I must have missed something.The only way I found is to change the WordPress “Display name” to Last name + First name and then use this field as sorting criteria, but that’s not what I want. I can’t change how members are named everywhere in WordPress just to fix the sorting issue of one page.
I was also hopping to find a solution via Custom fields, but so far I couldn’t find it.
So any idea?
There must be a solution to such basic need.Thanks!

I mean, if the enhancement request is rejected or added in the roadmap and for which version. So I don’t wait and wait for nothing.But only 1 option “Last name, then First name” should be easy to add and it’s the most common if not the only logical option when you sort person names.
