sort_column

The documentation at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Template_Tags/list_cats states that I can only sort categories by ID or name. What I’d like to do is sort by number of posts in the category (optioncount). I’m obviously a PHP novice, so any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
