Sorting on users lastname

Is it possible to sort on the users last name instead of it’s display name?
The current setting makes it possible for users to change the sorting by changing their display name setting. e.g. if a user selects “firstname – lastname” it will sort on firstname while others may have “lastname – firstname” and be sorting on their last name.
