sorting posts by popularity?

I’m using Alex King’s Popularity Contest plugin and I’d like to use it do sort category pages and tag pages (generated by Ultimate Tag Warrior) by popularity. It just makes sense to me; when you look up a blog’s posts by category/tags, don’t you want to see the most interesting stuff (rather than the most recent)?

Anyhow, does anyone know how to do this? I’ve tried without success to use custom select queries and I’m about ready to pull my hair out. All of my efforts either produce posts sorted after the date-based paging (useless) or buggy behavior. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
