We’re working on an alternate feed that combines two previously separate podcasts. In order to handle the order of the episodes of these different casts, we wanted to use “Recorded date” to allow us to mix the two feeds.

However this feature doesn’t seem to be working as intended. Even with “Source for publish date” set to “Recorded date” in the Feed settings, the episodes are listed using the Published date from WordPress in the feed.

We’re using Seriously Simple Podcasting 2.8.2 on a WordPress 5.7.2 blog. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi @meisi11,

Is this the primary (default) feed for the podcast (domain.com/feed/podcast) or is this podcast created as a Series? (So the feed would be domain.com/feed/podcast/series-name)

    Thanks, @meisi11 – let us know. ??

    Hi @keleigh824 – it’s a Series feed.

    Thanks @meisi11!

We may have a bug there for this setting when applied in the Series Feed Details. Our developers are going to confirm it and hopefully we can get that resolved in the next release. This setting should be working for default feeds but moving episodes and changing feeds might be problematic so we’ll definitely try to get this resolved for you ASAP.

Unfortunately the new update to SSP seems to have only partially fixed the problem. We’ve just updated to 2.9.2 and while the episodes now have the “Recorded date” used as the field for the publish date, the entries in the feed still seem to be ordered in the RSS based on the WordPress publish date.

This isn’t a problem on some podcatchers, like Apple, but Amazon and a few others seem to be sorting based on the order episodes appear in the RSS rather than sorting by the date. You can also see this in the HTML version put together by SSP (the episodes should mostly alternate between the two shows on the feed, but the first 50 or so are only from the one):

Is there any chance we could get it so that they’re sorted properly in the feed itself too?

A more clear example would probably actually be to compare how it looks in a podcatcher that works vs one that doesn’t.

Here’s Spotify (ordering as intended. They are clearly sorting by date):

Here’s Amazon (who seem to order based on appearance in the RSS feed):

    Hi @meisi11,

    Thanks for your response.

Currently, this setting toggle is only used for showing the episode date, not for the ordering of the RSS feed.

That said, we’ve passed your request along to our development team to start sketching out the ability for the plugin to sort items in the RSS feed based on “record date” like you’ve suggested.

Thanks and have a great day.

    Thanks @amongthestones !

In terms of the request, I would stress that this does seem like a pretty important addition to actually make the option to change the date usable. I’m assuming that the entire point of the feature is to allow you to present an alternate order for the episodes, and as long as podcatchers like Amazon Music are sorting by the order of the feed rather than the date, this user story isn’t quite being met in my opinion.

    Hi there @meisi11,

    Thanks for your response.

Our development team has started actively working on this feature, so look out for it in an upcoming version of SSP.

Thanks again for letting us know and have a great day.
