do you have the akismet plugin activated?

Yes, Askimet is enabled and up to date. As I said, it’s not a problem as they get held in the moderation queue.

I just wondered how they did it.

I’ve found that the combination of Askimet and Select TimesToCome Stop Bot Registration (https://herselfswebtools.com/2008/06/wordpress-plugin-to-prevent-bot-registrations.html) works wonders.

They post directly using your comment form template url

is excellent for stopping that

Thanks for the useful suggestions. I’ve just installed Cookies-for Comments so I’ll see how that goes. Unfortunately my host doesn’t support .htaccess so that’s out.

I was to the point of getting 50+ spam a day caught by Akismet

Which is great, nothing got to my site, but its a pain in the butt sorting through them for real comments

with CFC I get maybe 1 spam a week in Akismet to review (and I’ve had no reports of real comments not getting through)
