• My web site was flooded with spam comments. I did wrote down the IP and put into blacklist. The question that I have is, will the blacklist stop user on that blacklist from posting a comments or just only mark as spam. Do I need some kind of plug in to have access to comments restricted base on IP blacklist?. Is there some setting that I can put the IP to prevent from visiting the web site. Thanks.

  • Try to use Anti-spam plugin. It blocks spam automatically and without captcha.

It is very easy to use: just install and it works silently for you and user.

I’d suggest that you activate Akismet and install https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/cookies-for-comments/ to control the spam.

In 2 days, I had over 1000 spam comments. I set the e-mail notification when new comment is posted for moderation. My mail box was flooded. I would like to keep the e-mail notification. The other option I have is to edit the access and add IP to so they will see 403. I am looking for a way to restrict access to comments base on blacklisted IP`s.
    Thank you.

IPs are a really clumsy way of trying to block spammers. The range of potential IP address is too great and too many innocent visitors will also get hit by IP blocks. The plugins I mentioned above should stop 99.99% of all spam.

The problem that I see with this plug in – it will put the comment into spam, but still will send me e-mail and will have to pay for it. I do not want to shut the web site access to spammers, but I do not want them to be able to post a comments.
That kind of plug in I am looking for. Thank you.

Again, as I wrote before: give a try for Anti-spam plugin and write back tomorrow how many spam emails you received.

but still will send me e-mail

No – it does not send any emails. Anything that Akismet marks as spam is entered silently into its spam list for you to check online whenever you want. comments are automatically deleted permanently from this spam list after 15 days. And no one is blocked from the site. On one of my sites, it’s successfully dealt with 99.92% of the spam (about 25k comments). On another older blog, it’s dealt with 97k spam comments (a 99.9% success rate).

The other question I have regarding comments. The guest have ti fill up 3 fields:username,e-mail and home page url. The home page url is linked to username. How do I unlink the home page url or remove that field?. Thanks.

Why do people still need spam in their databases? ?? Ok, never mind ??

IMHO Akismet make too much expensive actions to check if the comment is “spam”. It is much easier to check if commenter is spammer immediately on the server or in the browser.

Well, I rename the url field in comments.php and that solved some of the problems. Some of the guests were using the website url as form of spam advertising. I want only genuine comments. That will keep some of the spammers away. Thank you all for help. The captcha that I put for comments should restrict some too.

I rename the url field in comments.php

In your theme or in WordPress core?

Oh – and captchas are worthless.

In theme. I just rename to “Real Name” and it works. The captcha will stop some canned posts. Most of the spammers are too lazy and looking for easy way. I understand that this will not stop all of them, but at least some. Thanks.
