• Hey all-

I had something kind of odd occur a few days ago at my site. I got an approval notice and checked it out and it was a submitted comment from a user which was not registered on my WordPress install.

Pardon my ignorance if I’m wrong, but if I choose not to allow people to post comments without registering, doesn’t that preclude unregistered people from submitting comments?

I guess my question is, what would a spambot use as a backdoor to get around the registration requirement?

    My site is: https://www.krimson-news.com/

  • If you have the settings on to disallow unregistered comments, then there should be no way around that, though I don’t know about trackback….

I just went to your site and it told me I had to be logged in to leave a comment, so obviously you’ve got the setting right

Yeah, it’s just so weird… I’ll keep an eye out, it only happened once, but I was thinking maybe there was a back door somewhere which would allow people to submit comments.

I also have bots bypassing my PHPBB security as well, so I guess I’m just a bit of a target for such things. hehe

Thanks for vetting it for me. ??

What sorts of plugins are you running for spam management? You might look Akismet or Spam Karma 2 — either one of those with Bad Behavior plugin up front is a great combo.

I have mine set to disallow unregistered comments, but trackbacks were still sneaking in. Bad Behavior zaps about 95% of those now though. ??

(thinking of implementing Akismet as a backup measure .. have read so many good things about it)

I’m having the same problem. Does anyone know why this is happening or if there is a solution?

same here! i can’t stop the spam by Just the Bad Behavior plugins, so i added dr Dave’s Spam Karma 2, it’s a lot better to use BOTH together!!

This blog is protected by dr Dave’s Spam Karma 2: 703 Spams eaten and counting &

Bad Behavior has blocked 175 access attempts in the last 7 days.

The problem is that there shouldn’t be ANY spam on my blog (or even any new legitimate comments for that matter) because I require registration and no one has registered.

Spambots are somehow bypassing the registration requirement and posting comments. It is being caught by Akismet, which is great, but it shouldn’t even be getting that far.

    Welcome to Trackback spam.

Bad Behavior, mentioned elsewhere in this thread, helps a lot with these.
