• Hokay, couple of goodies here for y’all ??

On Site #1 ( https://russ.innereyes.com/ ), I get a bunch of spam. But, it never makes it to the blog or to moderation – I get the email saying the comment was moderated (despite having that option turned off in WP), but they never show up. What the heck is going on there?

On Site #2 ( https://www.blog-themes.com/ ), the exact same spam plugins are installed and the exact same WP options are specified, but spam still shows up on the blog. ???

“Site #2” actually refers to two WP sites – one’s a brand-new installation, the other is an upgraded one. All 3 sites are now running the most recent “official” 1.5 with the following plugins:
    -BadPostID
    -URI Blocklist
    -WordPress HashCash

Anyone have any thoughts? In the first example, i shouldn’t be getting any emails about moderated comments that never seem to exist when I actually look for them (they don’t exist in the database itself either, I’ve checked). In the second, spam is getting through despite identical setups (except for theme and amount of content – all 3 sites are on the same server).

I should note that I have no plans to install SpamKarma – I can’t comment on my own site when that thing’s installed, and to my knowledge I haven’t been allowed to post on *any* blog with it installed. It says that my URL has too many hyphens in it, every single time.

Maybe site #1 has already loads of spam word defined to block them?

Options -> Discussions -> Comment Moderation etc.

Are these options also the same on all three blogs?

Yup, they’re identical – both lists (moderation and blacklist) on each blog are completely empty, except that the blacklists all have “nutzu” in them.

Uhhh, the I am baffled as well. If you deactivate and delete the plugins – do you still have the same problem/weirdness?

Try using WP-HashCash as your anti-spam plugin of choice.

You might want to give AuthImage a try. That’s the only thing I’m using right now and I haven’t received any spam in a while. I’ve been thinking about using the SpamAssassin plug-in as a backup, but haven’t got to it just yet.

Orange: tried that with two of the three sites, but no change once they were reactivated.

Macmanx: i’m already using hashcash on all 3 sites, and judging from the page sources, it’s working fine despite not blocking any spam so far as I know.

Davincim: i’ve been avoiding going to any kind of authimage-type plugin simply because i hate being on the receiving end of them. but if it ends up being the only way, then so be it ??

    If you’re running WP v1.5, try Kitten’s Spaminator. https://dev.wp-plugins.org/browser/spaminator/trunk/

I’ve tried it before – once I got it working on a Windows server (an easy fix, just took a while to actually figure the thing out), but same problem – I get blocked at every single site I know of that uses it, including my own site when it’s enabled.

The main problem, spam aside, is that 3 different blogs on the same host running the same version of WP and on the same Apache 2 server and on 3 different databases in MySQL 4.1, with PHP5 behind-the-scenes, have 2 different behaviours. Only 1 blog successfully blocks the spam, but still sends me emails regarding their moderation even though those comments don’t physically exist in the database (the counter in those emails is incremented though), and the other 2 blogs let the spam through untouched.

Have you tried disabling all plugins except WP-HashCash? And, is it the WP-HashCash for v1.5? https://dev.wp-plugins.org/browser/wp-hashcash/branches/wordpress-1.5/
